Website crash clouds HRL’s attempt to stabilize housing crisis

The University of Miami Department of Housing and Residential Life (HRL) announced a new application process with hopes of smoother room selection for those seeking on-campus housing in 2023. With no guarantee of accommodation, many students are gearing up for another battle for on-campus housing. When the application opened on Feb. 3, the application website crashed, creating a long line of anxious in-person visitors at HRL’s office on the first floor of Eaton Residential College. Most students who came in-person were looking to resolve an issue regarding their roommates. For some students, there was a glitch in the application that switched their gender, resulting in an incorrect list of roommates.

UM introduces TAP program to combat the national teacher shortage

More than 200 classrooms in Miami Dade County Public Schools began the 2022-23 academic school year without an assigned teacher. The University of Miami, in partnership with Achieve Miami and Teach for America, developed the Teacher Accelerator Program to combat the teacher shortage by guaranteeing undergraduate seniors a teaching position in Miami Dade Public Schools after a one semester course and summer internship. “If you are living in this country, any child, every child should have access to a quality education, no matter their background, no matter their zip code.” Leslie Miller-Saiontz, founder and president of Achieve Miami and the TAP program, said.

VISIONS Exhibit: Black creatives at UM focus on the future

“Black people are innovating in terms of their sense of self. We are no longer letting society define us,” Sydnae Becton, a fourth-year psychology major, said. “We are expressing ourselves in a beautiful and colorful way for future generations to come.”

On Tuesday, Feb. 7 rumors spread across the University of Miami of a possible roofying incident at a fraternity event that resulted in Pi Kappa Alpha (Pike) being temporarily placed on cease-and-desist order. Sources informed The Miami Hurricane that several party-goers believed they had been roofied at a fraternity event but had either not received medical testing to confirm their suspicions or did not want to report tests.

Countless mass shootings continue to affect UM student livelihoods

As of Feb. 1, 2023, 53 mass shootings have taken place this year. These 53 follow the estimated 648 mass shootings that took Americans’ lives in 2022. As mass shootings continue to pepper the United States — in schools, parades and an LGBTQ nightclub, more people find themselves forced to cope with the fall out of gun violence.

Hairology’s first annual hair show celebrating “Hair-I-TageR...

Hairology, in collaboration with multiple student organizations, will be throwing their first annual hair show on Feb. 7, 2023. Scheduled during Black Awareness Month, “Hair-i-tage” will trace the history behind hairstyles and fashion from the African Regions, Afro-Europe, the Caribbean and Afro-Latino communities.
