Miami women’s basketball lost 82-42 on Thursday night, with Notre Dame immediately taking control of the ball offensively and defensively.

After the first quarter, Notre Dame led 18-6.

Notre Dame is undefeated in conference play this season, opening up an opportunity for them to dominate in March Madness.

Not only did Notre Dame’s defense show up, but Miami’s offense also struggled. Notably, the ‘Canes went 0-for-16 from three-point range.

At the end of the half, Notre Dame still dominated, leading 38-13.

During halftime, two Miami Hurricanes came down to the court to receive the National Championship Division I Award for Service. The ’Canes registered the most service hours of all Division I, II and III schools. Baseball player Brian Walters and track star Elle Mezzio received this award for the Hurricanes.

“I’d like to focus on the last two games before this one, because we brought great defense in both,” head coach Tricia Cullop said. “They’re a really strong team.”

Miami wasn’t able to take a stance offensively, as the third period ended with the ’Canes being down 56-28 and the final period ending with a score of 82-42.

Despite the vast scoring gap, Miami’s Cameron Williams scored 12 points and displayed aggressive defensive skills throughout the game. In the first quarter she faced a controversial call, ending up in her favor.

The Fighting Irish were led in scoring by senior guard Sonia Citron, who had a game-high 19 points. Sophomore guard Cassandre Prosper also contributed off of Notre Dame’s bench, scoring eight points and hauling in five rebounds.

“She had a fantastic game today,” Notre Dame head coach Niele Ivey said. “She’s another unselfish player … She gives us such a spark offensively and defensively.”

Miami will face Wake Forest at home on Sunday at noon for its season finale.
