The Miami Hurricanes entered Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday afternoon as 25.5-point favorites over Middle Tennessee State and left with a 45-31 loss. Here are some takeaways from Saturday’s shocking defeat.

“We’re very strong-minded in the sense that if you suffer a loss, you don’t get rattled, you don’t throw up your hands, you don’t panic,” Miami head coach Mario Cristobal said. “You stay the course of always trying to get better.”

“This was a great first race back for Daphnee,” Miami assistant coach Cody Halsey said. “Melanie Schultz was a tough athlete, so it’s exciting to see Daphnee break such a long-standing record so early in the season. It’s a testament to the consistent work she continues to put in. I’m looking forward to progressing in training with her.”

“We came up short, there’s no sugar coating that,” Miami head coach Mario Cristobal said. “We have to go and get better and eliminate issues that hurt us in this game.”

“We are extremely excited about this year’s ACC schedule, which features eight postseason teams, numerous top-25 opponents and several marquee home games,” Miami head coach Katie Meier said in a Miami Athletics release. “Our student-athletes come to Miami to play big-time games and the conference schedule provides them with that opportunity. The ACC consistently leads all conferences for most teams selected to the NCAA Tournament, cementing itself as an elite women’s basketball conference and we are fortunate to be part of it.”

“Bethune is a good football team with good coaches and all we are looking for is to play our very best football,” Cristobal said to reporters at a media availability.

“I can definitely say I’ve never played on a [defensive line] so deep before,” senior Jacob Lichtenstein said. “We are all really progressing and pushing each other to get better.”

“Over the course of the season, our guys played well enough to be a top-eight seed, and we’re in a good position. There’s a lot of ways to get to Omaha and win it, but one of them certainly helps to be at home,” Miami head coach Gino DiMare said.

“It’s just a great thing we are playing here at home, we’ve played super well at home,” UM closer Andrew Walters said. “A lot of people are going to come down here, it’s going to be hot, but we are ready for it.”

The Miami Hurricanes were unable to play a full nine as they trailed by too many runs after seven innings, losing against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons 16-3 in their final game of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament.
