The Miami Hurricanes opened ACC play with a bang on Friday night at Mark Light Field, handing No. 19 NC State its first loss of the season in a 9-8 victory.
The Greentree Practice Fields looked drastically different from last year as several new faces, staff members and athletes alike, worked hard under the Miami sun during Hurricanes football’s first spring practice of the year on Saturday morning.
“Any time you get 20 runs and 21 hits, that doesn’t happen very often, so it’s a good way to finish the series,” head coach Gino DiMare said. “We were able to complete the sweep, which is never easy in college baseball.”
Miami women’s basketball became the first collegiate program sanctioned by the NCAA on Friday in relation to a case concerning name, image and likeness. The Hurricanes have been placed on one year of probation after the NCAA determined head coach Katie Meier had impermissible contact with a booster, billionaire John Ruiz, during the recruitment process of twins Haley and Hanna Cavinder this past summer, according to statement released by the Division I Committee on Infractions.
No. 22 Miami entered Friday’s matchup against Dartmouth with the third-most home runs in the country at 15. By the end of the game, the Hurricanes had mashed two more – both three-run shots – to beat the Big Green 9-7 at Mark Light Field for their fifth consecutive victory.
“Does that [game] not tell you how good the ACC is? Florida State, in the first half, I thought, ‘they’re going to the Final Four,’” head coach Katie Meier said. “They’re really good, but it turns out that Miami is really good, too. For us to have to outscore them in the second half and drop 53 was just necessary. I’m really happy, this was a huge win for us.”
The Hurricanes used a late surge to overcome an 11-point second half deficit and defeat the Syracuse Orange, 82-78, on Monday night at the Watsco Center.
The University of Miami swimming and diving team ended the regular season in spectacular fashion on Friday afternoon at the Whitten Center Pool, coasting to wins over Houston and Florida Gulf Coast University by 187-108 and 225-70 scores, respectively.
