Severe car accident next to University Village, two students hospitalized

At approximately 9:15 p.m. Thursday night, Coral Gables Police Department and UMPD responded to a two-car crash that injured two student pedestrians near University Village. According to spectators, Donald Chaney, Jr., a UM football player, was driving an orange Dodge Charger down San Amaro Dr. when another student driver turning left from Albenga Ave collided into him. Two young women crossing the street were struck in the crash.

Where to go for a dose of Miami culture

When you think of Miami, images of South Beach and Ocean Drive with their art deco buildings, neon lights and luxury cars probably come to mind. While those are certainly spots to hit in the 305, there is so much more than meets the eye in this city. For students looking for a real dose of Miami culture over their next few years at UM, here is a guide on some places to visit including a few local spots that are must-dos.

UMiami commemorated the freshman dorm building’s legacy in an event held outside of Hecht, as a way of saying goodbye this past Tuesday, April 26. The event comes in light of this year’s announcement that Hecht would be the first building taken down for UM’s Centennial Village, a new housing complex that will primarily house incoming freshmen.

Caroline Val

Caroline Val is a senior from Orlando, Fla. majoring in journalism and with double minors in political science and French. She began writing for the news section of The Hurricane in the fall of her sophomore year and developed its first ever podcast, Catch Up 'Canes, as podcast editor last year. Born in Miami, Caroline is excited to reconnect with the South Florida community through storytelling, interviews, and writing as co-news editor this year. Val is also a freelance contributor for the Miami New Times, an intern with News@theU, and loves trying all the new restaurants in Miami in her spare time!
