The Canes took down in-state opponent South Florida for Miami coach Katie Meier’s 400th of her career, and will take on South Carolina, the top overall seed in the NCAA Tournament, on Sunday in the second round.
“It was an affirmation for us,” Miami coach Katie Meier said. “We had a solid resume, so we felt pretty good about our chances. When our name was called, it was such a happy moment with the team.”
“The regular season is a marathon because it has 20 games. Each of them has equal value in terms of trying to win your league. So, whether you finish, like Duke did, 16-4 and in first place, it doesn’t matter who you beat [because] … as long as you’ve got the best record in the league, you’ve won the marathon," Miami head coach Jim Larrañaga said.
After consecutive losses to rival Florida over the weekend, the Miami Hurricanes bounced back on Tuesday night, riding a nine-run seventh inning to a 12-5 victory.
Trailing by 15 points in the fourth quarter against a top-five opponent, many teams would fold, but not the Miami Hurricanes. They rode the hot hand in the final period, with redshirt senior Destiny Harden’s personal 15-0 scoring run, capped off by a game-winning fadeaway buzzer-beater to lift Miami over No. 4 Louisville, 61-59.
The Miami Hurricanes swimming and diving team had three swimmers finish out the regular season at the Bulldog Invitational this weekend at the University of Georgia’s Ramsey Center. Redshirt senior Danika Huizinga, junior Aino Otava and sophomore Emma Sundstrand competed for the Hurricanes in Athens, Georgia.
The Hurricanes (15-10, 8-7 ACC) are now over .500 in conference play for the first time this season. UM had four players score in double-figures, including freshman guard Jasmyne Roberts, who had a career-high 10 points.
The Miami Hurricanes women’s basketball team has gotten itself back to .500 on the season following back-to-back wins against Florida State and Virginia, and now looks to improve to 8-7 in conference play as it takes on the Pittsburgh Panthers at the Watsco Center.
“There’s just a lot to play for in a game like this,” Meier said. “I think we put ourself in a good place now that we are ahead of Florida State in the standings.”
