From volleyball snapping a seven match losing streak to Darian Mensah’s record-breaking performance against Wake Forest, Miami athletics had a week full of milestones.
Here’s the latest edition of the Hurricane Huddle (9/16-9/23):
Sept. 17 – Hurricanes Volleyball captures first win of the season against LSU
Miami Volleyball captured their first win of the season against LSU in the Canes Classic on Sept. 17.
Freshman Ruth Martinez led the Hurricanes with a career-high 26 kills. Ariana Rodriguez recorded her first double-double of the season with 35 assists and 13 digs. On the defensive side, freshman Denitsa Angelova led with seven blocks.
Sept. 17 – Hurricanes Soccer falls to No. 13 Virginia
Miami suffered a 3-0 loss against No. 13 Virginia in Charlottesville, Va. last Thursday.
Goalkeeper Atlee Olofson recorded six saves, but the Hurricanes attack couldn’t get it going on the road.
Sept. 18 – Hurricanes Cross Country competes at FSU Pre-Regional
Miami’s cross county teams traveled to Tallahassee, Fla., to compete in the FSU Pre-Regional.
The women placed third overall as a team. Maddie Scheier led the way with a 21:08, finishing fourth overall.
Freshman John Templeton crossed the finish line first for the men, finishing with a time of 25:15:8.
Miami will travel to South Bend, Indiana, on Oct. 2 for the Joe Piane-Notre Dame Invitational. The first race is set for 10 a.m. EST.
Sept. 18 – Hurricanes defeat Wake Forest 33-20 in ACC matchup
Miami defeated Wake Forest 33-20 in Winston Salem, N.C., behind a record-breaking performance from Mensah.
Mensah completed 30 for 34 passes with 220 yards and three touchdowns. He set a new Miami and ACC record with 24 consecutive completions in a single game and 35 consecutive completions across multiple games.
Ethan O’Connor’s late interception helped secure the win for Miami which marked Mario Cristobal’s 100th career win as a collegiate head coach.
Malachi Toney finished with 12 catches for 114 yards and a touchdown and Mark Fletcher Jr. added 16 carries for 85 yards and a touchdown.
Sept. 19 – Hurricanes sweep Tulsa to end Canes Classic
Miami defeated Tulsa 3-0 to end the Canes Classic, improving to 2-7 overall.
Martinez led offensively with 10 kills, five service aces, and three blocks. Her five aces ranked eighth in program history for a three-set match. Angelova recorded a career high 10 kills.
Miami finished with 13 aces as a team, the fourth-most in program history.
Sept. 20 – Hurricanes capture 2-1 road win over NC State
Freshman Maddie Sadusky scored both goals as Miami defeated NC State 2-1 in Raleigh, N.C.
Miami improved to 7-2-1 overall and 2-1 in ACC play. Goalkeeper Atlee Olofson recorded three saves in the victory.

Sept 23. – Hurricanes Volleyball travels to Tallahassee to Face FSU
Miami will travel to Tallahassee, Fla., to take on rival Florida State on Wednesday, Sept. 23, at Tully Gymnasium.
The Hurricanes enter with a 2-7 record, coming off their second win against Tulsa on Sept. 19. Florida State is 5-5 overall.
Florida State’s Kyleene Filimaua is coming off her fifth double-double of the season against No. 10 Florida. Miami will look to limit her impact.
The first serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST.
Sept. 24 – Hurricanes Soccer hosts Clemson
Miami will host Clemson on Thursday, Sept. 24, at Cobb Stadium in Coral Gables, Fla.
Clemson enters the matchup coming off a 2-0 victory over Syracuse.
Freshman UM standout Sadusky has been a major part on offense, scoring both goals in Miami’s 2-1 win over NC State.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. EST.
Sept. 26- Hurricanes host Central Michigan
Miami will host Central Michigan on Saturday, Sept. 26 at Hard Rock Stadium.
Miami’s defense could be tested again as they look to be without cornerbacks O.J Frederique, Xavier Lucas, and Ja’boree Antoine.
In addition to the three already-injured cornerbacks, the Hurricanes suffered two season-ending injuries against Wake Forest.
Running back CharMar “Marty” Brown and wide receiver Joshua Moore have been ruled out for the rest of the season.
Junior running back Jordan Lyle is expecting to return after missing the first three games on suspension.
Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. EST.
