Death toll continues to rise following Turkey-Syria earthquake

A 7.8-magnitude earthquake rocked northern and western regions of Syria and southern and central parts of Turkey, initiating a humanitarian disaster and compounding political tensions that have existed for decades. In the early morning on Feb. 6, the Middle East was faced with a historical natural disaster. With the epicenter just 40 km west of Gaziantep, a major city in south-central Turkey, the event has caused insurmountable damage and devastated tens of thousands of lives across the two countries.

Walking on eggshells: Avian Flu outbreak devastates bird populations

The U.S. poultry industry is scrambling to control the latest avian flu outbreak that has decimated bird populations across the United States. The virus, known as Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (H5N1) has caused more than 58 million bird deaths in commercial and backyard flocks since Feb. 2022. As a result, the price of eggs and other poultry products have skyrocketed over the past year, rising by almost 60% in 2022.

UM moves classes online in anticipation of Tropical Storm Nicole

The University of Miami released a statement on Tuesday afternoon announcing that all classes and campus operations across the Coral Gables and Marine campuses will move online, beginning at 12 a.m. Wednesday through the end of day. On Monday at approximately 12 p.m., UM addressed the presence of a strong tropical storm forming near the Bahamas.

As of June 2022, the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) will now be known as the Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric and Earth Science or the Rosenstiel School. The name change comes after reflecting on the school’s achievements in earth science education and research over the past 10 years.
