The University of Miami announced that Shawn Eichorst has agreed to terms to take over the position that was left vacant by Kirby Hocutt’s departure in late February.

After a disappointing 21-15 season, a 79-64 defeat to the Alabama Crimson Tide in the NIT Tournament and the sudden resignation of former coach Frank Haith this past April, the future looked questionable for the Hurricanes men’s basketball team.

Last season, the Hurricanes women’s basketball team went through a magical season that took them from worst to first in the ACC standings and made the team one of the more interesting teams to watch in the entire country.

The Hurricane football team will kick off a new season and look to get back amongst the nation’s elite programs when it faces off against the University of Maryland on Labor Day Weekend. It will open up a stretch in which the Canes face off against Ohio State, Kansas State and Virginia Tech, as well as the Terrapins, in four of the first five games of the season.

It seems as if this has been the underlying theme for Miami athletics over the past few years. No matter how frustrating, repetitive, or perplexing a season might seem, there was always the hope for the future. “Next year” was always the year to look out for.

Intangibles- Like any rivalry between the Canes and the Seminoles, this is a big weekend for both of these teams. The Canes went 2-2 against the Seminoles last year, picking up a win in Tallahassee as well as one in the ACC Tournament. Still this is an FSU team that went to the College World Series last year. The Seminoles come into the series on a seven game winning streak, including a series sweep of the Duke Blue Devils. Miami won two of three against North Carolina, who at the time was ranked No.10, so both teams, as expected, have a lot going for them heading into the series.

Miami (27-13, 15-5) took two of three games from UNC over the weekend, including a sweep of a Saturday double-header that was the result of a rainout on Friday.

The University of Miami announced Jim Larranaga as it’s new head basketball coach on Friday night. He leaves behind a program at George Mason that he has coached since 1997.
