“Honestly, our girls are just being tough,” Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “We’ve been focusing more on toughness than tennis, and that’s what we’ve got to do moving forward...This is a huge out-of-conference win.”
“I’ve been coaching long enough to have seen [Miami’s 1983] national championship team,” Steele said. “I have seen Miami football, Miami defense, up close and personal from many venues. I understand the responsibility that we have here, and that history is very important to us.”
“The best thing about the ACC this year is that every opponent, except for one, is in the top 100 for NET, and most are in the top 50,” Miami coach Katie Meier said. “The ACC is an incredibly powerful conference. Every game we have remaining is an opportunity for us to improve our resume and that is why you join these leagues."
Miami (3-1) traveled to Waco, Texas, to compete in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at the Hurd Tennis Center on Jan. 28 and 29. While there, they narrowly lost to USC (5-0), 4-3 before bouncing back against Kansas (0-3), 4-1.
"We played terrific for a long stretch," Miami head coach Jim Larranaga said. "We built up a great lead to start the second half, and we were able to hold on. Real credit goes to the whole team, but in particular Bensley Joseph, who had to come in and run the point at the end of the game when Charlie Moore fouled out."
Miami goalkeeper Melissa Dagenais continues to excel. Jumping through the air, booting balls far downfield and diving left and right, the 6-foot-1 junior put on a clinic Saturday night, posting seven saves on eight Clemson shots.
Miami head coach Sarah Barnes continued to experiment with the starting lineup on Thursday, starting freshman Lauren Meeks for the first time. The fourth-year coach wants to achieve a balance between the veterans and young players on the field.
At 7 p.m. this Saturday, the No. 22 Canes (0-1) look to bounce back against the Appalachian State Mountaineers (1-0), marking the return of in-person student attendance to Hard Rock Stadium for the first time since 2019.
