One of the most popular schools within the University of Miami has officially changed its name. What was previously known as the Patti and Allan Herbert Business School is now just titled the University of Miami Business School.
When it was first built in 1992, the school was called the University of Miami Business School, but was renamed in honor of the Herberts in 2019 for more than $100 million in lifetime donations to the University. In a video announcing the name change, former University of Miami president Julio Frenk said the school will “henceforth and in perpetuity” have the Patti and Allan Herbert name.
Now, seven years later, the Herbert name has been removed.
Patti Herbert passed away in 2020 at age 84, and Allan Herbert passed away last year at age 89.
“Allan Herbert’s passing created a change in circumstances that led the Herbert family and the University to mutually agree to revisit the Herberts’ philanthropic commitments, redirecting them to student scholarships,” the University said in a statement to The Hurricane. “While their generosity will continue to open doors of opportunity for generations to come, this transition leaves the University of Miami Business School open to further investment.”
The Herbert name is a staple across UM’s campus, with the Patti and Allan Herbert Wellness Center, Love Bridge and the business school formerly named in their honor.
But the Herberts are more than just names that students pass by every day; they represent a legacy of philanthropy and personal history ingrained within the University.
As undergraduates at UM, Allan and Patti Herbert fell in love while earning business degrees. Allan said, “It was love at first sight.”
They were married for 62 years, during which they had successful careers in business and real estate, started a family, and gave back to the University that meant so much to them.
In total, the Herberts donated more than $100 million to UM, some of which went to the business school.
